A regional media company is searching for the ‘Graubünden Personality of the Year’ for the tenth time.

This is a good opportunity to pause and take a look at people who have shaped Grisons not with big words, but with deeds. Six personalities are up for election again this year. Three women and three men who have taken on responsibility in very different ways and achieved something special in the canton.

‘As a Canadian with roots in Central Switzerland, I don’t really feel comfortable with the nomination for Graubünden Personality of the Year.’

Othmar F. Arnold is one of them. With the Tenna Hospice, he has created a place that simply did not exist in the Safiental valley before: a place for people who do not want to move away at the end of their lives, but want to stay – in their home region. Arnold knows this wish only too well from his many years of work at Spitex and the ambulatory palliative care service. Time and again, he saw people having to leave their familiar surroundings as soon as they needed care. A personal experience finally prompted him to turn a vision into reality. Today, the Tenna Hospice is a residential community for the final stage of life. Arnold himself lives in the house and organises nursing and medical care when it is needed. Otherwise, the residents help each other.
