Merry Christmas – Season’s Greetings

Christmas as a feast day is intended to remind us of the worldly presence of the divine Light, at the same time as the return of the longer daylight hours for those who live in the northern hemisphere.

More than forty years ago, I crafted the figurines for this simple nativity scene. The figurines survived in a box in my parents’ attic. I am glad they came out to see the light again.

It is tied straw work, a technique popular in german-speaking areas. It was made from a renewable and affordable resource for all.

Weihnachten ist ein Festtag der uns daran erinnern soll dass das göttliche Licht auch auf Erden präsent ist. Gleichzeitig markiert das Fest auch die länger werdenden Tage für die Leute die auf der nördlichen Halbkugel zu Hause sind.

Vor mehr als vierzig Jahren habe ich diese einfachen Krippenfiguren hergestellt. Alles was es dazu brauchte waren Strohhalme und Faden. Die Figuren haben in einer Schachtel im Estrich meiner Eltern überdauert. Ich bin froh, dass sie nun wieder ans Licht gekommen sind.

Mutige Worte aus der Chefetage

Anstelle von Nettigkeiten und Belanglosigkeiten, hat Franziskus, Bischof von Rom, mit seiner Führungselite eine ehrliche Einschätzung der Situation geteilt. Ich denke, die folgenden Worte sind auch für die Gesellschaft von heute durchaus treffend.

  1. Die Krankheit, sich für unsterblich oder unverzichtbar zu halten

„Eine [Organisation], die nicht zur Selbstkritik fähig ist, die sich nicht erneuert, die nicht versucht, sich zu verbessern, ist ein kranker Leib“. Dies sei die Krankheit derer, die sich in Herren verwandelten und sich über allen und nicht im Dienst aller fühlten. Diese Krankheit entstamme oft der „Pathologie der Macht“, dem „Komplex, sich erwählt zu fühlen“, dem Narzissmus.

Brave words from the top

Instead of pleasantries and platitudes, Francis, bishop of Rome, shared with his executive staff an honest assessment of the situation. I think, the following words are applicable to the wider society of today.

The first is “the sickness of considering oneself ‘immortal’, ‘immune’ or ‘indispensable‘, neglecting the necessary and habitual controls. A[n organization] that is not self-critical, that does not stay up-to-date, that does not seek to better itself, is an ailing body. … It is the sickness of the rich fool who thinks he will live for all eternity, and of those who transform themselves into masters and believe themselves superior to others, rather than at their service”.

Die spielerische Seite von Friedensarbeit: study war no more

Es geschah auf dem Deck der Fähre M/V Malaspina auf dem Alaska Marine Highway System. Diese Überfahrt von Skagway südwärts war trotz der Nebensaison voll besetzt von einer farbenfrohen Menge: Es waren meist Reisende und Musikanten die dem langen Winter im Yukon für ein paar Tage entfliehen wollten. Alle sehnten sich nach einem Anblick von grün an der Westküste nach einem halben Jahr im Schnee und mit eisigen Temperaturen.

Es gab kein ruhiges Plätzchen auf diesem Fährschiff. Leute in Daunenjacken und mit Wollmützen musizierten in grösseren und kleineren Formationen auf ihren Gitarren, Trommeln, Flöten, oder mit menschlichen Stimmen.

Das Schiff war unterwegs auf dem Lynn Kanal, einem Fjord an der Westküste Alaskas, der von saftigen grünen Regenwäldern und kahlen Felsenklippen umgeben ist. In der Höhe sind immer schneebedeckte Gipfel des Küstengebirges zu sehen.

The playful side of peace work: study war no more

It happened on the deck of the M/V Malaspina of the Alaska Marine Highway system. This off-season run from Skagway southbound was jam-packed with a colourful gathering of travellers and musicians escaping the long Yukon winter. Everybody was craving a glimpse of coastal green after half a year of snow and sub-zero temperatures.

There was no quiet place on this ferry. People in down jackets and wool hats were jamming with their guitars, bongos, flutes, and voices.

The ship was travelling down the Lynn Canal, passing dark rain forest and sheer cliffs lined by snow-capped costal peaks.

Muttertag – und was dahinter steckt

Erhebt euch, alle Frauen die Herzen haben, egal ob ihr mit Wasser oder mit Tränen getauft seid! Sagt deutlich: Wir werden die grossen Fragen nicht durch irrelevante Gremien entschieden haben. (J. W. Howe, 1870)

Vergesst die Blumen, die Pralinen, die überteuerten Karten mit aufgedruckten Standartfloskeln. Die oft übersehenen oder nicht ernst genommenen Anliegen und Beiträge der Mütter in aller Welt sind von höchster politischer und sozialer Relevanz. 

Der folgende Appell ist eine der Grundlagen für einen offiziellen Feiertag zur Ehren der Mutter: Darin geht es nicht um romantisierende Vorstellungen oder um eine Vermarktung im Namen des uneingeschränkten Profites! Die Dringlichkeit, die Mütter als Bewahrerinnen des Friedens an zu erkennen und ihnen dazu eine Stimme zu verleihen, hat seither nicht abgenommen.

Forget the flowers, the chocolates, the overpriced cards with a printed, standard nicety on it. Mothers’ concerns and contributions are of highest political and social importance.

The following appeal is one of the roots of Mother’s Day as a celebrated holiday: No romantic notion and definitely no commercialization in the name of greedy profit! The urgency to recognize mothers as peace keepers of the world and to give them a voice as such has not diminished since then.
