En route – von Werthenstein nach Luzern

Leaving behind the security of the castle like monastery of Werthenstein that continues to provide good accommodation for pilgrims – Der ausgeruhte Pilger muss die Sicherheit des burgartigen Klosters wieder verlassen. A rest stop in a marvel of Baroque architecture and a repository of significant sacral art. Nach Blatten verliess ich den Emmenuferweg und stieg hoch zum Renggloch wo sich der Bach durch die Felsen zwängt – After Blatten I left the valley bottom and started to climb towards the Renggloch where a river carved a deep gorge.
On the way to the top of Sonnenberg: An impressive view of the valley of the Little Emme River. Too bad that the sun would not shine on the “Sun Mountain”. – Auf dem Weg zum höchsten Punkt des Sonnenberges gab es einen imposanten Blick zurück ins Tal der Kleinen Emme. Nur leider zeigte sich die Sonne nicht.

Zur Abwechslung vom immer weiterführenden Weg beschritt ich auf dem Sonnenberg ein Labyrinth – The labyrinth on the Sonnenberg provided a nice change from constantly moving on along the trail.

Thanks to all the dog owners of the communities along the hiking trail: It is your daily dedication to your dogs and to your outdoor pursuits that have helped tremendously in maintaining the various sections of the pilgrim’s trail. Without your help, I would have been a much bigger effort for me to break trail through the snow along the Little Emme River and over the Sonnenberg.

Besten Dank an alle Hundebesitzer in den Gemeinden entlang der Fernwanderroute: Es ist eure tägliche Hingabe für eure Vierbeiner und eure Begeisterung für Naturerlebnisse die stark mitgeholfen haben die unterschiedlichen Abschnitte des Pilgerweges zu unterhalten. Ohne eure Hilfe wäre es für mich viel anstrengender gewesen den Weg entlang des Emmenuferweges oder über den Sonnenberg zu pfaden.

Noch eine Brücke überqueren und schon bin ich am Tagesziel – One more bridge to cross and I will be at my destination for the day.
Auf dem Weg begegnete ich diesen Rhätischen Grauviechern. Vor mehr als 25 Jahren half ich mit diese vom Aussterben bedrohte Bergrinderrasse mit einem Zuchtprogram zu erhalten – Along the trail I encountered a group of Grey Alpine cattle. I helped to preserve this heritage breed through participation in a breeding program more than 25 years ago.

Aufbruch – Departures #4

After a full week of sharing life with the Sunnehuegel community, it was time for me to break camp and to start breaking trail again. After a hearty breakfast, I left in subzero temperatures with overcast skies. The last days, the sun tried to break through the clouds and the fog, but today grey was the main colour hue in the landscape of the Entlebuch.

I followed the hiking trail along the Little Emme River. In the vicinity of the towns, there were recent footprints in the snow. On the more remote sections, I followed the animal tracks, mostly fox and some deer. There were a few raptors perched in the trees along the river. It was quiet and peaceful. The river is following its course through the narrows and the wider sections with riparian habitats, surrounded by rocky outcrops that are decorated with curtains of icicles.

I need that distance and solitude in order to start processing the impressions gained during the previous week. The former monastery is a solid shell, a firm framework for community life. It becomes palpable very quickly, how these walls, the architecture separates the wider world from the more insular world of the Sunnehuegel community. Continue reading “Aufbruch – Departures #4” →

Obedience – Gehorsam

Obedience is very often understood in relation to the fact that one gives orders and others obey. Obedience is of great importance in hierarchical systems, such as the army, where obedience is imperative and non-obedience leads to punishment. The same is true in the church, where obedience is a special virtue and leads to salvation. Non-obedience is a guide to hell in various church organizations and denominations. But even the seemingly value-free market economy demands absolute obedience. According to proponents of a neo-liberal economic paradigm, influencing the invisible market forces will only lead to misfortune: therefore are government regulations, and other considerations and interventions for the common good responsible for all the ills of today’s consumer society. Ausgrenzung, Unterdrückung, und Widerstand (+en)

Bei der Ankunft im ehemaligen Kapuziner Kloster, dem heutigen Haus der Gastfreundschaft, ist eine grosse, steinerne Gedenktafel sichtbar. Obwohl die Tafel in erster Line auf die Baugeschichte des historischen Gebäudes verweist, lässt sich aus dem ersten Satz viel Vorgeschichte heraus lesen:

„Zur Beruhigung der bitteren Untertanen schickte nach dem Bauernkrieg von 1653 der Rat von Luzern die Kapuziner nach Schüpfheim und erbaute ihnen auf eigene Kosten hier, wo bisher ein Galgen mit Überresten hingerichteter Bauernführer stand, Kirche und Kloster.

Ankunft – Arrival #3

It was the most beautiful day to arrive in Schüpfheim. Or as the Swiss would say: It was a weather like on a postcard. Brilliant sunshine and deep blue sky over a snow-covered landscape. I fully understand all the families that got the skis out of their basements or attics to make a few runs down a hill!

En route: Swiss mountain travel

 

Mountain travel in Switzerland is possible wherever in the country one is: Here from the lowest point in Switzerland, the Rhine River in Basel it is an easy walk to climb the Minster Hill.
No matter what mode of transportation one chooses: Each one of them will create its own challenges, particularly in winter time.
For me, the most comfortable way to travel to the mountains is by train. In the comfort of a heated wagon, one arrives usually on time at many destinations near or even on top of mountains.
But the winter season can be tough on the equipment and infrastructure: The engine of a BLS (Berne-Lötschberg-Simplon) train composition en route from Lucerne to Berne.
In comparison to a snowed-in railway track, the road conditions for the yellow post busses and private motorized vehicles look way more treacherous at this time of the year. Why live with the stress?
For the most relaxed way of mountain travel: The fleet of steamships on Lake Lucerne on stand by.
Sometimes, the specialized vehicles from the mountains make a journey to the city: This old one-axle tractor and carriage combo made an appearance for the carnival season in Lucerne.
For me, the most reliable mode of transportation that brings me to the mountains, up the mountains, and safely back down is still on foot! The entrance to the Aare River Gorge near Innertkirchen.
And this may be the reward for one’s efforts. The Unterhorn and the Oberhorn near Tenna in the Safien valley on a clear day with a fresh coat of snow. How beautiful and majestic.

Ankunft – Arrival #2

Schon seit Tagen bin ich am Ankommen hier in der Schweiz. Ich hatte ja keinen napoleonischen Einzug geplant oder vorgesehen. Und es war trotzdem ein einzigartiges Erlebnis:
Von Mainz aus bin ich im Hochgeschwindigkeitszug dem Rhein entlang Richtung Schweiz gefahren. Das steht im Widerspruch zu meiner Absicht des langsam Reisens. Doch irgendwie hatte ich nach dem erholenden Aufenthalt in Mainz das Bedürfnis anzukommen. Natürlich war der schmerzende Fuss und die leichte Gehbehinderung durch die Blase und Schwellung am linken Fuss mit ein Grund, dass ich im Moment weniger Lust hatte, zu Fuss oder sonst wie von Ort zu Ort zu reisen.
